Errant Space Podcast 120: Ten Years

This month’s podcast marks a decade of Errant Space podcasting!

I’ve dug into the archives and found some rare or unreleased bonus tracks to celebrate.

It begins with a piece for piano and percussion by Peter Fagiola that features some guitar atmospherics by me (Craig).

Next some recordings made with David Rothenberg at his Bee Street studio (that’s what I call it. May not be its actual name.) David plays clarinets and synthesizers, I’m playing guitar.

Then we have a dub experiment with Bastian Void (modular synths). I put on my Errant Bass hat for this one.

That’s followed by a remotely recorded collabo with the incomparable Walter Wright on drums. It gets rowdy!

After that a duo recorded at Neil Alexander’s studio where he experimented with live processing grand piano, in preparation for the 100th  ES podcast performance.

And we conclude with a piece I composed for artist Kathleen Anderson’s project Tuning Score for the Nervous System.

What a decade it has been! Thank you for listening (if you have been).

Errant Space Podcast One Hundred

This month brings the 100th Errant Space podcast!!

To mark the occasion, I organized a live event featuring eight past podcast participants which took place on July 1, 2023 at the Howland Cultural Center in Beacon, NY.

It was a three hour performance with the performers surrounding the audience, who were encouraged to listen while horizontal. The musicians played in rotating groups of three. This podcast is taken from that performance.

These are the musicians who participated in the experiment:

Al Margolis (piezo micro sounds)

Dean Sharp (processed percussives, samples)

Katie Down (glass and metal instruments, flutes)

Thom Uliasz (TV synthesizers)

Bonnie Kane (saxophone, flute, processing)

Sandy Santra (piano)

Neil Alexander (piano + processing)

Andy Rinehart (piano, accordion)

and me (Craig) (guitar, processing)

We had a fair number of audience members come through during the performance, you’ll hear people moving about on the recording. For best results, listen while laying down, it will almost be like you were there…

Errant Space Podcast #12 – Adventures In Electronic Music

ES_FB_podcast_windtunnel_COLOR_784x295

Here it is, the twelfth Errant Space Podcast! And we’re closing out the first year of podcasts with a real doozy! This one features TWO previous guests: Neil Alexander (ES podcast #8) and Dean Sharp (ES podcast #3). We recorded this one at Neil’s monthly Adventures In Electronic Music workshop at Space Create in Newburgh, NY on February 3, 2016. It was a fun evening with a Q&A about looping techniques and gear, followed by a couple of improvised pieces which are presented here as the first three-way collaborations on the Errant Space Podcast. Big thanks to Neil for inviting Dean and me to be part of the workshop. It was a real honor to play with both those guys and I think the end product is a rather fantastic sonic journey.

Errant Space Podcast #8 – Errant Space v. Nailgun

Another collaboration this month! Featuring Nailgun (the ubiquitous Neil Alexander) on keyboards and assorted tech.

Nailgun

It was an honor to have Neil stop by for some improvised soundscaping. I’d seen him perform a few times, but didn’t really know him beyond that. Turns out he’s a super-nice guy and it was a real joy to make music with him. I’m very much looking forward to collaborating with him again in the future!
